Spilak was a rescue. A black lab mix from a shelter in Long Beach, picked up after his second strike of being « too jumpy » for previous adopters.
The first thunderstorm after we brought him home, he tried to dig through the bathroom floor. The vet prescribed a sedative. We tried it once. He spent the next day in a fog, staring at nothing.
We didn't want our dog to be drugged to feel safe in his own home.
What didn't work
We tried everything you've probably tried. Adaptil diffusers (some weeks better than others). Calming chews (mostly placebo, in our experience). A thunder shirt (good for him, useless for the cat). A weighted blanket. White noise. A second dog, briefly, that did not help.
So we did what desperate pet parents do at 2 a.m.: we started reading studies. We found a small body of research on dog-appeasing analogs and plant-derived compounds that don't sedate, but help an over-aroused nervous system stand down.
What did work
We reached out to a veterinary behaviorist in San Diego who'd been formulating off-label calming blends for her own clinic for years. She had no interest in being a brand. She just wanted dogs and cats to feel less terrible.
Over fourteen months, we tested formula after formula on a small group of foster pets. Drug-free. Odorless to humans. Designed to be safe to diffuse around a household, indefinitely.

Why we donate ten meals per order
Because Spilak the dog spent four months in a shelter eating donated food, waiting for someone to take a chance on him.
For every SPILAK order, we fund 10 nutritious meals for shelter dogs and cats through Greater Good Charities' Rescue Bank. Calmer pets at home. Fed pets in shelters. That's the whole loop.
Our first impact report drops August 1, 2026. We're aiming for 10,000 meals donated in the launch window. We'll publish the receipts.
